Boot Camp Basics: Summer Edition

These five 1.5-hour virtual workshops are designed for brand new staff in summer, third space, and out-of-school time programs and are a great way for new staff to orient to the field and learn basic best practices in their work focusing on summer programs:

1. Creative Curriculum — May 10, 2022 (6:00–7:30 PM)
This workshop will help staff learn how to create engaging curriculum in an efficient and low stress way. We will learn how to utilize existing resources and youth voice to plan dynamic sessions, and create variety and excitement for the youth.

2. Keeping it Fun for All Summer — May 17, 2022 (6:00–7:30 PM)
This workshop will focus on how to keep children and staff engaged throughout the entire summer. Staff will learn tips on how to motivate children to plan, engage in,and reflect on camp activities. We will also learn strategies to keep staff actively involved with children and youth while making it fun for all.

3. Summer Safety — May 24, 2022 (6:00–7:30 PM)
This workshop will cover program safety with consideration and focus on summer-specific activities. Staff will learn how to proactively establish safety protocols and procedures as well as what to look for while ensuring a safe environment for all participants.

4. Social-Emotional Learning in Summer — May 31, 2022 (6:00–7:30 PM)
This workshop will focus on the opportunities and challenges we face in implementing social-emotional strategies in summer programs. We will brainstorm ways to leverage summer activities to promote youths’ social-emotional well-being while considering challenges unique to summer programs.

5. Reframing Conflict — June 7, 2022 (6:00–7:30 PM)
What role do you play in conflict situations with the youth in your program? Do you know how to turn a conflict situation into an opportunity for growth? This interactive workshop introduces participants to the High/Scope step-by-step model for reframing conflict as well as general principles of conflict resolution.

The Boot Camp Basics Series is offered FREE for staff at summer learning, third space, and out-of-school-time programs serving school-age youth. Our “real-time” online trainings are approved by Northern Lights at CCV, and your attendance will be submitted to BFIS. Trainings will be delivered through Zoom. It is strongly suggested that you use a device (computer or phone) with a webcam. If you don’t have access to one, you can call in.

Participants can register for the entire series or select individual trainings. You must register as spots are limited.
