Afterschool programs spark interest in learning so youth attend school more often, get better grades, and improve their behavior in class. They are safe spaces for youth to build protective factors by providing opportunities for young people to connect, to express themselves, and to build healthy relationships with caring staff. And it’s the staff—the hundreds of dedicated afterschool professionals who work tirelessly every single day to care for the state’s youth—who are the heart of afterschool in Vermont.

To honor their work and highlight the importance of high-quality afterschool care for Vermont’s children, families, and communities, Vermont Afterschool has established two annual awards: the Afterschool Professional of the Year Award and the Afterschool Rising Star Award.

We are currently seeking nominations for exceptional afterschool professionals whose work exemplifies afterschool best practices. Nominations are due Monday, July 7. Awards will be announced at Vermont Afterschool’s Annual Conference and the winners will receive a cash prize, a plaque, and recognition for all that they do for Vermont’s children and families.

Eligible nominees for the Afterschool Professional of Year Award must:

  • Work directly with school-age children in a public or private, school- or community-based afterschool program;
  • Work a minimum of ten hours each week at an afterschool program; and
  • Have been an afterschool professional for three or more years

Eligible nominees for the Afterschool Rising Star Award must:
