Universal Afterschool Update

We’re THRILLED to announce that the Vermont Agency of Education has awarded $3.5 million in grant funding to 17 supervisory unions and nonprofits in 11 Vermont counties! These grantees across the state will be coordinating with over 73 community partners to expand access to afterschool and summer learning programs, and push Vermont that much closer to universal afterschool.

This pool of money comes from the state’s new dedicated source of funding to support the creation and expansion of afterschool and summer programs—programs that help children learn, grow, and stay safe; and serve as a lifeline for the working families on whom Vermont’s communities, businesses, and economy rely.

The seventeen programs include:

  • The introduction of weekend programming and added staff in school systems such as Vergennes Elementary, Caledonia Central Supervisory Union, Franklin Northwest, and Windham Southeast.
  • Collaboration with organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club and Vermont Works for Women to expand services with a focus on career readiness and academic support in places like Barre, Essex, and Brattleboro.
  • New initiatives that will equip students with essential skills for future success including Burlington School District programs that will support historically marginalized students by focusing on better serving New Americans, English language learners, and students with truancy and academic challenges.
  • Programs at Cabot Elementary and Missisquoi Valley School District that will foster youth leadership and volunteer opportunities allowing for peer mentorship and social emotional learning.

We are so thankful for Vermont’s afterschool champions—in and out of Montpelier—whose passion and efforts over the last few years made this vision a reality. We look forward to seeing the impact of this year’s grants on Vermont’s communities and the continued and increasing investment of Vermont’s public, private, and nonprofit afterschool and summer learning programs in the years to come.
